What's in a name? The story behind Solana Jewelry.

While I was in high school I started making jewelry. Over time my style evolved and designs matured, and during this progression, I would reinvent my brand to reflect each epoch. What started as "Miss Kelly Jewelry" in high school morphed into "Rocks" in my after college years. I loved the name "Rocks". In addition to the name being inherently edgy and slightly irreverent, I loved that it drew attention to the components of the treasures I created. The gemstones I used were indeed stones; they came from this earth, typically starting in an unassuming and sometimes unattractive form. However, with work, care, and love, these stones were transformed into something magnificent. I had the privilege of showcasing them in each piece I created. Then came a long break. It started as a creative pause, because I knew I wanted to take my designs in a new direction, but I wasn't sure where. Then I started grad school, and suddenly I had no free time. What little time I did have I wanted to spend outside and away from a desk.

I would still attend gem shows and swoon over the stones. I would look at other designers' work with a bit of jealousy and lust. I would travel to new places and be taken aback by the culture and landscape, and have a desire to share its essence. A new vision for my creative work was simmering and bubbling to the surface as time went on. Several years went by, and then I found myself in a different type of pause. I had two shoulder surgeries that put me out of the activities I loved for the better part of a year. While I could not surf or practice yoga, I could design and create. It was as if the floodgates opened. So in this new phase of life, I needed a new name. Solana, which means sunshine in Spanish, was chosen for several reasons. I wanted my jewelry to embody the freedom, warmth, and culture of where I live in California. Also, Solana Beach is one of my favorite places. The town has some fun surf breaks and it is home to the inspiring artistic community of Cedros Design District. For me, Solana evokes a feeling a warmth, artistry, and love for where I live, so I thought it was a perfect fit.
