New Year, Fresh Start - Organizing My Jewelry Business for the New Year

I hate the feeling of having so much to do, but never having enough time. The reality is that regardless of your situation, there will always be competing priorities and a daily balancing act of what is urgent vs. what is important. A source of stress for me is getting caught up with focusing on those urgent tasks, and in the process, losing focus on those long term important items. After the rush of the holiday season, I was greeted with a small window of downtime right before the 1st of the year. One of my goals this year for Solana Jewelry is to improve my planning process, so I welcomed this time as an opportunity to get a head start. Most of my business activities fall into two categories: creative and marketing. I decided I would start by focusing on the creative aspect, so the first thing I did was focus on bringing my office back to a clean and creative space. Since I was past the holiday rush, shipping supplies could be returned to their normal places, a bulk of the jewelry boxes were put away, and paper and ribbon scraps were discarded. Paperwork and receipts were organized (tax season is right around the corner), and I was able to give the space the deep-clean and organizational overhaul that it needed. Checking this item off my list felt good, even if it was the lowest hanging fruit.

The next thing I did was clear off and organize my work space. I carefully organized my current projects, put them aside, and made sure I was starting with a clean slate. You can imagine how messy the creative process can be - think of what a painter's studio looks like, but imagine it with beads, tools, stringing and silver supplies. My work desk can become a gemstone and finding soup (hey, it is a part of my color matching and design process)! After a couple of months of designing, though, I need a fresh clean space- both physically and mentally. Next up on the list: tackle my gemstone and supply inventory. Spring planning is in the works, and Summer and Fall are not too far off on the horizon. Therefore, I need to know what I have, what I need to buy and make, and have everything in order to keep my creative flow going. This is always the most time consuming activity, because as I am organizing my gemstones by type, color, and cut, I am also making design decisions. I spent several hours bringing together color pairings for each of the collections, referring to and adding to my Pinterest boards for inspiration, sketching designs, creating a few mock-ups, and making a list of what I need to purchase and what I needed to create in shop. By the time I was finished, I was satisfied with what I had accomplished and I felt good about what I needed to do next. Don't get me wrong, I still have A LOT of planning activities to do: marketing, blogs, promotions, etc. Getting these tasks out of the way, though, lifted a weight off my shoulders and cleared up my mental space to focus on the bigger tasks ahead!
